What do YOU need to write before it’s too late?
From a happy author: “Cindy helped me produce an heirloom of incalculable worth to my extended family and future generations. I wanted to give it to them while there is still time to answer the questions that our too-short visits don’t allow time for. I wanted to complete the book while we still live on the farm, in this wonderful old homestead full of rich, rich stories that will form such a vital part of their own personal unfolding adventures. As I stood looking out from our stoep at dawn one morning it occurred to me that my grandchildren may never hear the song of Burchell’s coucal, warning us that a good rain was on its way up to the farm from the sea. There are eight of them now, grandchildren; they are growing too fast. Scattered too widely across the globe, in faraway snowy Seattle, in the dazzling neon excitement of Tokyo, and in the pristine functionality of Stockholm. Their lives unfold year by year on my phone screen, with the help of the wonderful internet. I have regular video visits with all of them, and every third year they all come over to gather here in this old house where my children grew up, as I did, and my father before me, and his before. We have made peace with selling the farm in a few years, we are old now and none of the kids will come back to live here. I decided to write this book for them so that they may pass on to their children the history of this family farm, and to provide them with a curated album of memorabilia. Here are the letters from soldier sons to grieving mothers through centuries of wars, so that my grandsons will understand heritage, and so that the lovely lot of them will all take caution from the human mistakes that humble men can make out of misguided zeal. Here are the neatly handwritten pages of housekeeping journals and scrap-books, so that my dynamic, liberated granddaughters will know the compromises and obstacles endured and overcome by the women who came before, through recipes and newspaper cuttings about funerals, furniture, and corsets. Here are the treasured photographs of births, weddings, graduations, first motor cars, memorable train rides; here are our ancestral legends – triumphant and tragic.”
